For a store, the floor that is open again soonest can matter as much as the price. The spec sheet puts one data sheet's return-to-service figures beside the published ranges, and the barrier-free rule below covers doorways and transitions where a coating meets another floor.

The spec sheet

Polyaspartic / polyurea

Published price About $6 to $15 per sq ft installed (commercial work)

Polished concrete

  • A short closure: There is no coating to cure; ask how many grinding passes are planned and whether part of the floor can stay open.

Rules that apply here

  • Barrier-free floors (2024 OBC, Div. B, 3.8.1.3.(2))

Walking surfaces in a barrier-free path of travel: stable, firm and slip-resistant; changes in level over 13 mm sloped or ramped.

  • Change of use (Building Code Act, s.10)

If the floor job is part of a change of use that increases hazard (turning a store into a restaurant may be one), a permit is needed first: talk to the City.

Ask before you sign

  • The data-sheet time before customers can walk on it, and before display fixtures go back
  • How the coating meets doorways and other floors, and the finished height at each transition
  • Whether the work can be done after hours or in sections
  • The colour and finish options listed in the product's data sheet

Coatings IQ answers for this facility

Quick answers

Can a store floor be coated overnight?

Only one 2010 MMA brochure lists a cure of about one hour; the other data sheets we read list first traffic at 18 to 24 hours or more. Confirm the schedule against the data sheet for the product quoted.

What does the barrier-free rule mean at a door?

In a barrier-free path of travel, a change in level of more than 13 mm needs a slope or ramp under the 2024 Ontario Building Code. Ask how the coating meets each doorway.
