Restaurant Kitchen Floor Costs in Ottawa: A Spec Sheet
Get quotes for this facilityA restaurant kitchen floor has to satisfy a regulation as well as a cook line. Ontario's Food Premises regulation asks for floors in food rooms that are "tight, smooth and non-absorbent" and kept clean and in good repair; it names no product. Use the spec sheet below to see what the published prices and one data sheet per system say, then tick what your kitchen floor has to handle.

Rules that apply here
- O. Reg. 493/17, s.7(1)(c) and (g)
Floors in rooms where food is prepared, served or handled, where utensils are washed, and in washrooms: tight, smooth and non-absorbent, kept clean and in good repair. It does not mention coving, drains or slope.
- Ottawa Public Health
Inspects food premises and asks for approval when you plan to establish, build, change or significantly renovate one. Whether a re-coat counts as significant is not stated: ask OPH before booking.
- City of Ottawa permits
Adding floor or trench drains is a plumbing alteration and needs a permit. The City of Ottawa lists new flooring among projects that do not need a building permit, but the page does not say whether that covers commercial buildings: confirm with the City.

Quick answers
Does Ontario require coving or a floor drain in a restaurant kitchen?
O. Reg. 493/17 asks for floors that are tight, smooth and non-absorbent and kept clean and in good repair; it does not mention coving, drains or slope. A seamless floor with an integral cove base is one way to meet the wording.
Who approves kitchen floor coatings in Ontario?
We found no Ottawa Public Health or CFIA approval list for floor coatings. Treat "food-safe" on a product page as marketing and ask how the system meets the regulation's wording.
